Chris Smith was born in Alaska and attended middle and high school in Minnesota. In 2002, she completed her bachelor’s degree at the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire as a first-generation university student. After graduation she worked in social work in Wisconsin, taught English in Prague and in Thailand, and served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Ukraine. Chris received her PhD in Sociology from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2015. She completed a graduate certificate in Advanced Feminist Studies from the UMass department of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies in 2014. In 2015, Chris joined the Sociology faculty at the University of California, Davis. In 2019, she joined the Sociology faculty at the University of Toronto.
